Board Recognizes Science Teacher for Expanding Student STEM Opportunities

LINDEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, NJ -- The Linden Board of Education recognized Linden High School science teacher Pramila R. Natarajan for her leadership of the Linden Youth Enjoy Science Club and her efforts to connect students with healthcare, research, and career opportunities beyond the classroom.

Superintendent Dr. Atiya Y. Perkins presented Natarajan with a certificate of recognition during the May 28 board meeting, praising her vision and dedication in expanding the district's annual Health Fair and creating pathways that expose students to STEM-related careers.

"This was a huge community event where our students were exposed to many different STEM careers and experiences focused around health," Perkins said. "You are opening doors for many of our students, and we are extremely thankful for your leadership and passion."

The district's fourth annual Health Fair, held May 9, brought together research scientists from Rutgers University, Linden High School alumni, healthcare professionals, and community partners to provide students with hands-on learning experiences and career exploration opportunities.

In addressing the board, Natarajan highlighted the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development's Youth Transition to Work Program, which provides free training for students pursuing careers as pre-nursing aides and physical therapist aides. The program covers tuition, uniforms, transportation, and offers opportunities to earn college credits while creating direct pathways into healthcare careers.

"These students deserve the hope that success is possible," Natarajan told board members. "We want every student to be able to look into their future and see themselves succeeding."

During her remarks, Natarajan also credited district leadership for supporting students' participation in advanced programs, including Rutgers Youth Enjoy Science cancer research initiatives and opportunities through New Jersey Medical School.

District officials said Natarajan's work exemplifies the goals of Linden Public Schools' ROAR framework by expanding opportunities, building student confidence, and strengthening community partnerships that help prepare students for college and careers.
