LINDEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, NJ -- School No. 1 is growing its commitment to hands-on learning after being selected for the Union County KIDS DIG IN! School Garden Grant Program, an initiative supporting outdoor education and environmental stewardship.
The county-funded grant will help expand the school’s existing garden initiative, creating additional opportunities for students to engage in experiential learning centered on sustainability, nutrition, agriculture, and wellness.
During a May 18 recognition visit, representatives from the grant program joined members of the School No. 1 Garden Club in planting vegetables in newly installed garden beds, transforming outdoor space into an extension of the classroom.
Derek Armstead Mayor of Linden stopped by to congratulate students and staff on the achievement and recognize the impact of the school’s growing garden program.
Principal David M. Walker said the award strengthens the school’s commitment to meaningful, student-centered learning experiences that connect classroom instruction with real-world application.
“This is an exciting opportunity for our school family,” Walker said. “The garden will create meaningful hands-on learning experiences for our students while helping them better understand wellness, environmental responsibility, and the importance of working together as a community.”
Funded through the Union County Open Space, Recreation & Historic Preservation Trust Fund, the grant is part of the county’s broader Plant A Seed initiative, which supports schools and community organizations in developing gardens and outdoor educational spaces.
School leaders said the expanded garden initiative reflects Linden Public Schools’ commitment to impactful teaching and learning while reinforcing the district’s ROAR pillars of Resilience, Opportunities, Achievement, and Relationships.
