The program brings together students with and without intellectual disabilities through team-based activities designed to encourage friendship, communication, confidence, and school community. Throughout the school year, students from elementary schools through Linden High School participated in activities that promoted collaboration and meaningful peer relationships both on and off the field.
Athletic Director Michael Firestone said the program continues to have a positive impact on students across the district.
“Special Olympics is about creating opportunities for every student to belong,” Firestone said. “Watching these students support one another, grow together, and build friendships has been incredibly rewarding.”
District officials said the continued growth of the program reflects Linden Public Schools’ commitment to creating welcoming and inclusive learning environments where all students feel valued and supported.
Superintendent Atiya Y. Perkins emphasized the importance of expanding programs that celebrate diversity, strengthen school culture, and provide opportunities for all students to succeed.
The initiative also supports the district’s Strategic Plan priorities centered on student success, inclusive learning environments, and strong community partnerships.
By creating opportunities for students to participate, connect, and work together, district leaders said the Special Olympics program continues to strengthen relationships and foster a sense of belonging throughout the Linden school community.
