LINDEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, NJ — Hundreds of seniors at Linden High School gathered Friday morning, May 1, as Decision Day 2026 celebrated their postsecondary plans and the wide range of futures taking shape across the senior class.
The gymnasium quickly filled with students wearing apparel representing their next steps, including colleges, universities, trade schools, and branches of the military. The scene was striking and symbolic. A sea of logos. A clear statement of direction. From Rutgers University, Seton Hall University, and Princeton University, to Kean University and Felician University, to community colleges such as Union College of Union County and Middlesex College, and out-of-state institutions including Pennsylvania State University and Columbia University, the range of commitments reflected a districtwide focus on multiple pathways to success. Students pursuing military service, including the United States Marine Corps, and career training through programs like Lincoln Tech, were also represented, reinforcing that success is not one path but many.
The program, organized by college and career counselor Laura Golebiewski in collaboration with student leaders, continued a growing tradition centered on student voice and choice. Principal Charles Koonce and Superintendent Atiya Y. Perkins set the tone with remarks focused on preparation, purpose, and ownership of one’s future.
A highlight of the morning came with the return of Linden alumni, now navigating life beyond high school, who participated in a student panel that resonated throughout the gym. Panelists included Sheyla Caly of Monmouth University, Arianna Eastwood of University of New Haven, Hagr Elweshahy of Princeton University, Carlos Miranda of Rutgers University, Kris Ordonez of New York University, Alyssa Perez of Seton Hall University, and Christian Zamora, who serves in the United States National Guard while attending Union College of Union County. Together, they shared candid reflections on transition, independence, and growth, offering seniors real-world insight and practical advice as they prepare for their next chapter.
Following a video presentation highlighting the journey of the Class of 2026, the atmosphere shifted into celebration. Students gathered at a photo booth, shared moments with classmates, and connected with representatives from colleges, trade schools, and the military. The energy remained high, but the meaning ran deeper. This was not just a celebration. It was a moment of recognition.
For a graduating class of nearly 500 students, the day represented more than individual decisions. It reflected a collective milestone, shaped by years of preparation, support, and growth.
Across the district, that support was visible. In classrooms, hallways, and administrative offices, faculty and staff wore apparel representing their own alma maters, creating a unified show of pride and encouragement. The message was clear. Students are supported, their choices are valued, and their futures matter.
Decision Day at Linden High School continues to stand as a defining milestone. It is not only about where students are going, but about the preparation, perseverance, and purpose that brought them to this point.
