On April 21, in recognition of Autism Awareness Month, the schoolโs Spectrum of Sound Showcase turned everyday learning into a powerful performance. Superintendent Atiya Y. Perkins joined a packed room of parents, family members, and school and district administrators, all gathered to experience the moment as students took center stage.
This was not just a concert. It was a moment. A culminating experience where students stepped forward, took ownership, and brought their learning to life through sound, movement, and expression.
Guided by music teacher Sarah Walton, students built their skills piece by piece. Steady beat. Tempo. Dynamics. Instrument use. Each concept layered with intention. Singing blended with movement. Structure met creativity. The result was a performance that felt alive, authentic, and earned. For Walton, who will graduate from Montclair State Universitythis spring and receive the Outstanding Music Educator Award, the showcase captured the very essence of her work. Purposeful teaching. Visible growth. Students at the center.
Behind the scenes, the collaboration was just as powerful. Homeroom teachers Ms. Willett, Ms. Acqua Viva, and Ms. Rivera helped anchor the experience. Paraprofessionals supported each step. The art teacher extended the story visually with student artwork on display. Ms. Sheila, the schoolโs ESP of the Year, added a unifying touch with custom-designed t-shirts that gave every performer a sense of pride and belonging.
Then the moment arrived. The music started. And everything connected.
Every note told a story. Every movement carried meaning. Every student had a voice.
Spectrum of Sound stands as a clear reflection of Linden Public Schoolsโ commitment to inclusive, engaging instruction. It shows what happens when students are met where they are and guided forward with intention. It shows that achievement looks different for every learner, and that every path is worth celebrating.
And most importantly, it shows that when given the opportunity, every student can rise, perform, and be heard.
