April 10 return

LINDEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, NJ -- The return from Spring Recess did not feel routine. It felt focused. Energized. Together.

On Friday, April 10, students and staff across Linden Public Schools came back on a half-day schedule after Spring Recess. Instead of a quiet ease-in, the district turned the early dismissal into Tiger Pride Wellness Day, a shared experience that brought the district’s mission to life: empowering every student to reach their full potential through diversity, instructional excellence, and a deep commitment to the whole child.

Across the district, movement led the way. In gymnasiums, basketballs echoed off hardwood, volleyballs arced over nets, and soccer games unfolded in bursts of speed and laughter. In hallways and outdoor play areas, students rotated through relay games and light fitness activities. On green spaces and blacktops, they ran, skipped, and played under open skies.

Students and staff wore Tiger gear and Linden’s black and orange, turning every corridor into a living stream of school pride. Teachers and students stretched and danced together, creating moments that were both joyful and unifying. These were not just activities; they were opportunities in motion where students built confidence, collaborated with peers, and practiced skills that extend well beyond the classroom.

Then the tempo shifted. Gyms gave way to quiet classrooms and softly lit auditoriums. The day moved inward.

In classrooms, students engaged in guided meditation, slowed their breathing, and found stillness. In office spaces, faculty and staff took time for their own wellness through short mindfulness breaks and quiet reflection. In these moments, everyone strengthened focus, deepened self-awareness, and nurtured the resilience needed to move forward. The day showed that powerful teaching and learning also live in how schools care for the mind and the spirit, not only in what appears on a lesson plan.

From calm came creativity. Students turned to drawing and design, creating affirmation flowers and other artwork filled with messages of confidence, perseverance, and hope. Their words and images became visible affirmations of who they are and who they are becoming.

These expressions of student voice highlighted achievement in many forms and reinforced identity, self-belief, and the importance of recognizing growth not only on report cards but in character, courage, and community.

Spaces to Belong and Connect

At Soehl, the auditorium became a space for reflection and connection as students watched Inside Out. The film’s themes of emotional literacy and belonging gave students time to unwind, reconnect with friends, and ease back into the rhythm of school in a supportive environment.

Throughout the day, wellness did not sit in one room. It unfolded in classrooms, gymnasiums, hallways, outdoor play areas, green spaces, and office spaces where staff modeled balance and self-care. Open gym sessions mixed games, music, and cooperative play with cool-down areas for balance. Chess and checkers offered quiet, strategic engagement. Creative corners welcomed drawing and coloring, while mindfulness zones provided space for reading, journaling, and reflection.

Each space had a purpose. Each one helped strengthen relationships, foster belonging, and ensure that every student and adult felt seen, valued, and supported.

Wellness by Design

Tiger Pride Wellness Day reflected Linden Public Schools’ commitment to creating safe, welcoming, and engaging environments where students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. It also highlighted the belief that strong school communities grow from meaningful partnerships among students, staff, families, and the broader community.

ROAR in Action and Moving Forward

At School No. 1, Principal Dave Walker, for example, brought school spirit into the halls. Wearing a Tiger suit and surrounded by black and orange, he visited classrooms and common areas, greeting students and staff and sparking smiles. Each interaction reinforced the district’s ROAR values: Resilience, Opportunities, Achievement, and Relationships.

As Linden enters the final stretch of the school year, a clear message is present in every building: Every day counts. Every moment matters. Every student has the opportunity to grow.
