LINDEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, NJ — Linden High School students departed for China on April 2 as part of an international exchange program designed to expand global learning, language proficiency, and cultural understanding.
The departure followed a formal send-off reception held on Thursday, March 26, where students and their families gathered alongside district and city leaders to mark the beginning of the experience.
Students are traveling under the guidance of Chinese language educator Lynn Hu and a team of chaperones, participating in a program that blends academic learning with real-world cultural immersion.
During the exchange, students will strengthen their Chinese language skills in authentic settings and collaborate on a “China in My Eyes” video project, an initiative that promotes communication, creativity, and student voice.
The March 26 send-off featured remarks from community leaders, including Derek Armstead Mayor of Linden, Board of Education President Malaysia Thomas, Vice President Dr. Marlene Berghammer, and Board Member Brianna Armstead, all of whom offered encouragement and emphasized the significance of the opportunity.
Director of Multilingual Learners Danie Orelien also addressed families, highlighting the value of cross-cultural experiences and the importance of preparing students to navigate a globally connected world with confidence.
The exchange reflects Linden Public Schools’ continued focus on expanding opportunities for students through impactful teaching and learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. District leaders noted that the program supports the development of independence, adaptability, and global awareness—key components of student success in an increasingly interconnected society.
As students begin their journey abroad, the experience stands as a reflection of the district’s mission to empower all learners to reach their full potential through meaningful, real-world opportunities.
