From championships to classroom excellence, student-athletes embody ROAR as the district honors a season defined by resilience, opportunity, and achievement
LINDEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, NJ — It was not one moment. It was many.
A scholarship earned. A banner raised. A freshman breakthrough. A team that refused to bend.
Inside the Board of Education meeting on March 27, Linden Public Schools did more than recognize winter athletes. It told the story of a season defined by resilience, opportunity, and a standard that keeps rising.
“I would like to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of our winter student-athletes,” Athletic Director Mike Firestone said. “Their dedication, perseverance, and commitment to excellence continue to make our school community proud.”
Across programs, the recognition reflected ROAR in action. Students showing up. Competing. Growing.

On the basketball court, two careers reached a historic peak.
Seniors Jekhi Burnam and Jaren Barnett each surpassed 1,000 career points, securing their place on the program’s banner inside the Linden High School gym, a space reserved for the program’s all-time greats.
Burnam, a 6-foot-5 wing with a smooth, versatile game, delivered a strong senior campaign, finishing with a team-high 313 points across 29 games. He scored at all three levels, stretching defenses with 40 three-pointers while adding 72 rebounds. In big moments, he was steady. Confident. Reliable. His performance earned him NJ.com All Group 4 Second Team honors, placing him among the state’s top players.
Barnett, the senior point guard and emotional engine of the team, brought a different kind of impact. His numbers tell part of the story, 243 points, 56 assists, 28 steals. But his value ran deeper. He controlled pace. He created opportunities. He defended with edge and urgency. A transfer who quickly became a leader, Barnett delivered his milestone moment on Jan. 22, scoring his 1,000th point in the closing seconds against Scotch Plains-Fanwood.
Together, they formed a backcourt defined by balance and trust, powering Linden to a 19–10 record and a run to the **NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 Tournament sectional final.

In wrestling, the spotlight shifted to a breakthrough that signaled both present success and future promise.
Freshman Alvaro Fernandez Jr. captured the Union County championship at 175 pounds, becoming the program’s first county champion since 2019 and only the third in school history. He was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the upper weights, an extraordinary achievement that underscored his composure and dominance on the mat.
Coached by his father, Alvaro Fernandez Sr., the moment reflected the power of relationships in action. Mentorship. Trust. Shared commitment. A foundation that continues to define Linden’s athletic programs.
The success extended across the lineup.
Linden’s boys wrestling team captured the Mountain Division Conference Championship, highlighted by a hard-fought home victory over Arthur L. Johnson. It was a title built on depth, discipline, and collective effort across every weight class, a reflection of a program grounded in accountability and resilience.
Several of the athletes recognized in March were also honored at the Board’s February meeting, reinforcing a district-wide commitment to celebrating student growth and achievement throughout the season.
Because in Linden, every day counts.
“These achievements go far beyond wins and titles,” Firestone said. “They represent the character, discipline, and pride our student-athletes bring to their teams, their school, and their community every single day.”
And in that daily commitment, Linden’s student-athletes continue to show what is possible when opportunity meets effort, when environments are supportive, and when a community rallies behind its students.
They show up. They grow. They achieve.
They ROAR.
