A Moment of Affirmation
LINDEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, NJ -- Standing-room-only and pulsing with anticipation, the packed School No. 1 gymnasium reflected the wide and unmistakable reach of Brianna Armstead, a living mosaic of family, faith, public service, and political leadership gathered in one place.

Friends and supporters filled the room, some clutching balloons and bouquets of flowers, others holding oversized portraits that rose above the crowd like visual affirmations of pride. The scene unfolded during the Board of Education’s January 7 reorganization meeting, as Armstead became the first board member sworn in, officially beginning her second term on the nine-member Board. The oath was administered by New Jersey Lt. Governor-elect Dale Caldwell, lending both gravity and symbolism to the moment.

Then, one by one, voices took the microphone—not just to congratulate, but to testify. To who she is. To what she represents. To why this moment mattered.

At the center of it all stood a powerful cross-section of support spanning generations and geographies: from Armstead’s own family -- parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins -- to a formidable assembly of elected officials and civic leaders from Linden, Union County, Essex County, and across New Jersey.

Sworn in with pride and purpose, the moment affirmed not only her growing leadership—but her deep-rooted commitment to service, and the community that continues to stand firmly behind her.

Now entering this next chapter, Armstead brings with her a rare blend of media expertise, policy insight, and a deep commitment to student-centered advocacy, making her one of the most visible and visionary members of the Board.

A proud product of Linden Public Schools and a cum laude graduate of Rutgers University, Armstead earned her B.A. in Journalism and Media Studies and quickly forged a career at the intersection of communications, community building, and public service.

She currently serves as Senior Officer of Events and Marketing at the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), where she leads statewide engagement initiatives, high-impact sponsorships, and community-based programs that connect residents with essential resources and opportunities.

Before transitioning fully into government service, Armstead built a successful career in television and digital media, producing content for The Tamron Hall Show, Facebook Audio Rooms, Jesse Collins Entertainment, and the Rants and Gems Podcast. These experiences sharpened her ability to manage live productions, elevate diverse voices, and collaborate across disciplines—skills she now uses to amplify the work of Linden Public Schools.

As the Board’s liaison to the Marketing and Public Affairs Committee, Armstead is more than a policymaker—she is a mentor and a consistent presence in the lives of students.
She works closely with Linden High School’s production studio team, guiding students in segment development, interviewing, and content creation. These same students record and stream Board of Education meetings, gaining real-world experience in broadcasting and digital storytelling.

One of Armstead’s most celebrated initiatives is the annual Disney Film Workshop trip, which offers students immersive, hands-on exposure to careers in film, communications, and media. Over the past three years, she has helped raise more than $9,000 to ensure every interested student has access, regardless of financial background. She has also coordinated visits to The Drew Barrymore Show and other professional sets, further expanding their exposure and confidence.

Armstead’s goals for the year ahead reflect her student-first mindset and long-term vision for the district.

“𝗠𝘆 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺,” 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀. “𝗪𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲, 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹, 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱, 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱.”

She is a passionate advocate for expanding Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs across the district. Her focus includes connecting students with certification programs, internships, hands-on training, and mentorship from industry professionals. She also champions early career exploration, beginning in middle school, so students can better understand how their education connects to real-world opportunities.

“At the center of this vision is equity,” Armstead says. “Access to career pathways and CTE programs should not be limited by background, zip code, or financial circumstance. Every student deserves the opportunity to graduate with options—not obstacles.”

Outside her local role, Armstead continues to make her mark on broader civic stages. She is the youngest elected board member of the National Haitian American Elected and Appointed Officials Network, a member of the Essex County Young Democrats, and a proud graduate of both the New Jersey Black Women’s Collective Leadership Institute and the New Jersey Leadership
Collective Fellowship.

A daughter of a public servant and a proud product of the very school system she now helps lead, Brianna Armstead stands as a bold example of what it means to serve with vision, voice, and authenticity.
