LINDEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, NJ -- Long before the record books reflected her speed, Marleigh McDonald was already making waves, not just for her swimming ability, but for the way she showed up for others.

Whether slicing through the water in a final relay lap, guiding younger cadets through NJROTC drills, or deconstructing rhetorical strategies in AP English, Marleigh has built a reputation rooted in consistency, character, and drive. Her ability to juggle academic rigor, athletic competition, and leadership responsibilities has made her a standout in every space she occupies. And now, her story is commanding the spotlight.

Recognized by the Linden Board of Education for achieving a perfect score of 5 on the AP English Language and Composition Exam, Marleigh has emerged as a model of what’s possible when purpose meets preparation.

The AP English Exam: Mastery in Motion

Administered by the College Board, the AP English Language and Composition Exam is no ordinary test. It’s a college-level assessment that challenges students to read with precision, write with clarity, and argue with evidence. It demands intellectual dexterity -- the ability to analyze complex nonfiction, understand rhetorical nuance, and craft persuasive, tightly reasoned essays. A score of 5, the highest possible, represents not only mastery of content but a rare caliber of thought.

A Moment That Mattered

“She’s not just succeeding — she’s inspiring,” said Superintendent Dr. Atiya Y. Perkins, who presented Marleigh with a certificate of achievement at the July 24 Board of Education meeting. There, in front of district leaders, family, and faculty, Perkins praised her for being the embodiment of Linden’s ROAR values: Resilience, Opportunity, Achievement, and Relationships.

“This outstanding result reflects your commitment to learning, the effectiveness of our English Language Arts program, and the dedication of your teachers — especially Ms. Larsa Lee,” Perkins noted.

But for Marleigh, the moment wasn’t about accolades. It was about appreciation.

“I definitely would not be where I am without Linden Public Schools,” she said. “I’m grateful for all the teachers and mentors who believed in me.”

In the Pool: Presence Over Podiums

Marleigh’s impact can’t be captured by medals alone. On the swim team, she is more than a record-setter. She is the one teammates turn to before and after the race.

At meets, she moves with purpose: checking in with swimmers behind the blocks, delivering last-minute words of encouragement, and offering support no matter the result. “She’s the one we look to,” said one teammate. “Not just because she wins, but because she reminds us that we can too.”

Head Coach Rebecca Rotola has witnessed that influence firsthand. “For someone her age, I’m seriously impressed with how she manages her time,” said Rotola. “She gives her all to the sport and still shows up in every other area of her life. That’s rare. She’s a great force.”

Marleigh’s motivation? It isn’t about beating the clock. It is about bringing others along for the journey.

In the Classroom: Discipline, Depth, and Determination

The same tenacity Marleigh brings to the pool shows up in the classroom. Her perfect score on the AP exam wasn’t a stroke of luck — it was the product of late nights, layered analysis, and a mind trained to seek both clarity and complexity.

Superintendent Perkins connected the dots between Marleigh’s athletic and academic mindsets.

“It’s pleasing to see students who transfer their athletic resilience into their academics,” she said. “It leaves an example worth highlighting for those who question if it’s possible.”

Indeed, Marleigh has proven that grit is transferable -- from flip turns to final drafts.

In Uniform: Leadership in Every Layer

As a cadet in Linden High School’s NJROTC program, Marleigh doesn’t just show up — she steps up.

Whether she’s leading drill exercises, mentoring underclassmen, or supporting her fellow cadets through challenges, she brings a sense of calm authority and genuine care.

“She doesn’t just wear the uniform,” said one fellow cadet. “She lives the values behind it — and she’s always looking out for others.”

Her leadership style is not about spotlight or status — it’s about service. And whether she’s wearing goggles or a garrison cap, her integrity doesn’t waver.

In Her Own Words: Redefining Resilience

When asked what drives her, Marleigh doesn’t point to trophies or transcripts. Instead, she speaks of setbacks, and what they teach.

“It will knock you down,” she said. “But it teaches you to push forward — and to keep helping others do the same.”

Resilience, for Marleigh, isn’t just about recovery. It’s about return — showing up again, stronger, with someone else’s hand in yours.

A Living Portrait of a Graduate

At Linden Public Schools, student success is defined by more than test scores or championship banners. It’s measured by character, consistency, and the ability to uplift others. In every way, Marleigh McDonald has become a living portrait of that ideal.

“She’s the kind of student every district hopes for,” said Athletic Director Michael Firestone. “Because she represents not just what students can do — but who they can become.”

Marleigh’s legacy isn’t just about how far she’s gone. It’s about how many she’s inspired to rise with her.

As a tribute to her hard work and impact, Linden Public Schools’ media team has produced a documentary titled “The Wave of Marleigh.” The film highlights her journey and leadership both in and out of the classroom.
