245 students earn Principal’s Honor Roll; 145 recognized for perfect attendance
LINDEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, NJ — Applause echoed, pride was palpable, and the energy of achievement filled the Linden High School cafeteria on Tuesday morning, Dec. 10, as school leaders gathered to celebrate students doing something truly extraordinary—showing up, staying focused, and striving for excellence.
During a spirited breakfast recognition ceremony, 245 students were honored for earning the Principal’s Honor Roll, while 145 students were celebrated for maintaining perfect attendance so far this school year—an accomplishment that reflects commitment, discipline, and perseverance.
“This is one of my favorite times of the year,” said Linden High School Principal Charles Koonce, addressing a packed cafeteria of students, staff, and administrators. “Because I get to honor all of my babies for their hard work and dedication. What you’ve achieved is not easy.”
The Blueprint for Success
Principal Koonce challenged students to recognize the significance of their achievement, praising them for refusing to settle for average and for developing habits that will serve them long after graduation.
“Making the Principal’s Honor Roll means you have a serious mind,” he said. “You are disciplined. You are focused. You pay attention to details. These characteristics—this right here -- are the blueprint for success.”
For those recognized for perfect attendance, the moment carried even greater meaning.
“It takes real dedication to be here every day—despite the ups and downs,” Koonce told the students. “It all starts with attendance. So give yourselves a round of applause.”
Students were treated to a celebratory breakfast prepared by the school’s food services team, adding a warm, festive touch to the morning of recognition.
Discipline in Action
Among those honored was junior Ethan Hodash, whose perfect attendance is powered by a demanding daily routine shaped by his commitment to the Linden High School ROTC program.
“It takes a lot of discipline,” Hodash shared. “ROTC really helped establish that in me.”
His mornings begin early -- very early.
“I wake up between 4:30 and 5:30 every morning,” he said, explaining that he exercises, eats, and reports for ROTC drill team practice before the school day officially begins. “It prepares me for my future and motivates me to keep showing up.”
A Message from the Superintendent
Superintendent Dr. Atiya Y. Perkins joined the celebration, offering words of pride and encouragement to the students being recognized.
Calling it “their morning,” Superintendent Dr. Atiya Y. Perkins moved from table to table throughout the cafeteria, personally congratulating students and underscoring that their achievement mattered because they chose discipline, consistency, and belief in themselves.
“You’re here because you achieved honor roll. You achieved perfect attendance. And achievement means something—because you chose to show up for yourselves.”
She reminded students that the culture and success of Linden High School are shaped by their effort and belief.
“We need you here,” she added. “We need you to believe in your education. Celebrate your wins. Enjoy this moment. And keep it up.”
