LINDEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, NJ โ On the eve of Thanksgiving, the fifth graders at School No. 6 didnโt just read about history -- they lived it. Continuing a beloved, eight-year tradition led by the 5th Grade Team and supported by the dedicated PTA, students gathered for a Thanksgiving learning experience that blended story, culture, and community.
Before a single bite was taken, students were transported back in time to explore the origins of the very first Thanksgiving -- its purpose, its people, and the simple foods that once graced the table. Comparing those early customs to todayโs vibrant celebrations helped students understand how traditions evolve while still holding deep meaning.
Superintendent Dr. Atiya Y. Perkins stopped in to share in the excitement, watching fifth graders connect classroom learning with hands-on experience.
According to Nicole DeBrizzi, Fifth Grade Language Arts and Writing Teacher, the experience was intentionally immersive. Students learned how to properly set a table, practiced table etiquette, and worked collaboratively to prepare their dining spaces. Once seated, they enjoyed a sampling of traditional American Thanksgiving dishes, including turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cornbread, and both apple and pumpkin pie.
For many students, who often celebrate Thanksgiving with beloved foods from their own cultures, this was a unique opportunity to taste a classic American holiday meal and understand its historical significance.
For eight years, Mrs. DeBrizzi has poured creativity and care into this tradition, adding new elements each year while keeping its heart intact. What unfolded today was more than a feast. It was a rich blend of history, gratitude, community, and the joy of bringing learning to life.
