With music in the air, laughter from children, and backpacks of every color stacked high, Linden families gathered at the Raymond Wood Bauer Promenade in downtown Linden for Derek Armstead Mayor of Linden's annual Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway.
The Aug. 25 event brought together city leaders, local organizations, and Linden Public Schools in a powerful demonstration of community unity and care.
Nearly 1,000 backpacks were distributed to students, easing the financial burden on families and ensuring children are ready to start the new school year. The evening was filled with live entertainment from Saul Paul, free food, children’s activities, and opportunities to sign up for a Linden Public Library card—all wrapped in a festive, family-friendly atmosphere.
“This is about much more than school supplies,” said Mayor Armstead. “It’s about lifting families up, reinforcing that they’re not alone, and promoting a safe, violence-free school year for every student.”
City and district departments collaborated seamlessly. The Linden Health Department provided health resources, while Linden Public Schools guided families through meal form assistance and other supports.
Superintendent Dr. Atiya Y. Perkins praised the turnout as “a clear reflection of Linden’s unity,” while Danie Orelien, Director of Multilingual Learners, called it “inspiring to see the city, school board, and public schools unite for one purpose—to uplift our community.”
As the sun set, parents, children, and volunteers left with more than just backpacks—they carried a renewed sense of pride in the city they call home.
Mayor Armstead summed it up best: “Events like this reaffirm Linden’s strength. Together, we are one community, one family, preparing for a bright school year ahead.”
