When Alicia Ribeca was called to the stage to accept Linden Public Schoolsโ It Takes a Village Staff Award, she didnโt stand alone.
The McManus Middle School teacher was being honored for leading one of the school districtโs most powerful student initiatives of the yearโa ๐ฐ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐น ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐๐ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ท๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ฑ โ๐ก๐ผ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป ๐ฆ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒโโbut true to her character, she chose to share the moment with the sixth-grade students she guided every step of the way.

Her humility underscored exactly why she was being recognized. Ribeca sees teaching not as a platform for personal accolades but as an opportunity to spark empathy, curiosity, and leadership in young minds.
She received the award during the Board of Educationโs April meeting, which coincided with Teacher Appreciation Monthโfitting timing for an educator whose commitment goes far beyond the curriculum.

Walk into Room 200 at McManus, and itโs clear youโre entering more than just a middle school classroom. As Ryan Devaney, Supervisor of Student Services, described, โMiss Ribeca does not view her role as a job, but rather a work of art.โ
Under her leadership, ๐ ๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฉ ๐จ๐ ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฑ๐ญ๐ก ๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ฆ๐ฌ๐๐ฅ๐ฏ๐๐ฌ โ๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ฌ, ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐โ spent four months conducting interviews, producing media, and creating a campaign to celebrate diverse cultures and promote empathy as part of their ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ญ๐จ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ฐ ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐ง ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ฅ ๐๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ฌโ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ญ๐๐ฐ๐ข๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง.
โThis level of engagement doesnโt happen by chance,โ said Devaney. โIt happens with intentionโand heart.โ

McManus Principal William Mastriano noted that Ribecaโs dedication is felt well before the first bell rings.
โSheโs one of the first teachers in the building each day, running academic support sessions before school even starts,โ Mastriano said. โAnd on top of that, sheโs leading a project that teaches her studentsโand our whole communityโabout compassion, collaboration, and leadership.โ
Ribecaโs students interviewed teachers, classmates, city leaders, and even senior citizens. Their work gained attention from throughout Linden, including visits from Mayor Derek Armstead and Superintendent Dr. Atiya Perkins.
โThey were even logging on to Zoom during spring break because they were so excited about the work,โ Mastriano added. โThat tells you everything you need to know about the impact of this projectโand of this teacher.โ

Superintendent Dr. Atiya Y. Perkins praised Ribeca not only for her vision but for her belief in the abilities of her students.
โWhen you saw this project, you believed your students were capableโand they exceeded every expectation,โ Perkins said. โYou hold them accountable, you support their voices, and you push them to lead with heart.โ
From memorizing the mission to designing questions and managing technology, the students took ownership of the entire campaign.
โYou said yes to education,โ Perkins said, โand your classroom proves that learning is the most powerful tool to change the world.โ
For Alicia Ribeca, teaching has never been about standing in the spotlight.
Itโs about passing the light on to her studentsโand watching them shine.
