From the soccer fields of Tiger Stadium to the training rooms of Major League Baseball, Dr. Rolando J. Rodriguezโ€™s journey is one built on resilience, purpose, and deep Linden roots. The 2014 Linden High School graduate will return to Keystone Collegeโ€”his collegiate homeโ€”as the keynote speaker at the schoolโ€™s 154th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 17.

Rodriguez earned his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Rutgers University after graduating magna cum laude from Keystone College in 2018. For the proud first-generation American and first-generation college graduate, the invitation is more than a personal achievementโ€”itโ€™s a full-circle moment.

โ€œI am humbled and floored to have been asked to serve as the Commencement Speaker for Keystone Collegeโ€”my alma mater,โ€ Rodriguez shared. โ€œTo return to the place that shaped so much of who I am today, and to share a message with the next generation of graduates, is truly an honor. Grateful beyond words for this full-circle moment.โ€

โ€œTypically, Commencement addresses are given by someone who might be in the midpoint or second half of their career. We are excited to have Rolando, as a successful young alum who has already accomplished so much but who is still at the beginning of his career,โ€ said Pullo. โ€œHis story is reflective of Keystoneโ€™s 157-year legacy and the value of American higher education.โ€

Rooted in Linden, Raised to Lead

Rodriguez is a product of Linden Public Schools through and through. He graduated from Linden High School in 2014 with a 3.85 GPA, ranking 20th out of 422 students. A member of the National Honor Society, he also served as vice president of Student Government and president of the Italian Club. He captained the Varsity Soccer team and lettered in Varsity Baseball. His rรฉsumรฉ included participation in Mock Trial, Peer Group Connection, Tiger Print, Learn and Serve America, and the Italian National Honor Society. He was named a 2014 NJSIAA Scholar Athlete and received national academic honors from the United States Achievement Academy and Whoโ€™s Who Among All-American Scholars.

His academic track included honors and International Baccalaureate courses, and he consistently earned placement on the High Honor Roll and Principalโ€™s Honor Roll.

โ€œMy father is a proud maintenance worker for the City of Linden. My sisters and I are graduates of Linden High School, and together we have earned multiple advanced degrees, including masterโ€™s and doctorates,โ€ Rodriguez shared in a Facebook post. โ€œWe are proud products of the City of Linden, and it is an honor to represent Linden, NJ in all that I do.โ€

A Mayorโ€™s Pride and a Cityโ€™s Joy

Rodriguezโ€™s rise hasnโ€™t gone unnoticed in his hometownโ€”especially by city leadership.

โ€œThis is a proud moment for Linden,โ€ said Mayor Derek Armstead. โ€œAs Mayor, Iโ€™m thrilled to share some incredible news that fills our community with pride. Rolandoโ€™s journey from Lindenโ€™s classrooms to national recognition is a testament to what our youth can achieve.โ€

That sentiment was echoed by Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Atiya Y. Perkins, who emphasized the inspirational impact of Rodriguezโ€™s accomplishments on current and future Linden students.

โ€œStories like Dr. Rodriguezโ€™s truly exemplify what we hope for all our Linden Public Schools graduates,โ€ said Dr. Perkins. โ€œHis journey from Linden High School to earning a doctorate and becoming a licensed physical therapist for a Major League Baseball organization shows the caliber of students our district produces and the strong foundation we strive to provide. The Rodriguez familyโ€™s collective achievementsโ€”with Rolando earning a doctorate, his sister holding two masterโ€™s degrees including one from Columbia University, and another in speech-language pathologyโ€”stand as a testament to the potential we believe exists in all of our students.โ€

Rodriguezโ€™s upcoming address will shine a light not only on his personal accomplishments but also on the power of family, education, and community support in shaping dreams into reality.

From Keystone to the Big Leagues

At Keystone, Rodriguez quickly became a standout both academically and athletically. He was a leader on and off the fieldโ€”co-captaining the Menโ€™s Soccer Team to its first-ever CSAC final, earning CSAC All-Academic honors, and serving as class representative. He participated in the Honors Program, Presidentโ€™s Book Club, Inter-Hall Council, and the Keystone College Fellows Program.

After graduating in 2018, Rodriguez earned his Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) from Rutgers University. His clinical training included elite placements with the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas and the Navajo Nation Four Corners Regional Health Center in New Mexico. He later completed a prestigious Sports Residency at the University of Evansville and an Upper Extremity Sports Fellowship with the Hospital for Special Surgery and the New York Mets.

Rodriguez went on to serve as the International Minor League Physical Therapist for the Baltimore Orioles, managing player rehabilitation across Florida and the Dominican Republic in both English and Spanish. He currently serves as a Minor League Physical Therapist with the Los Angeles Angels in Arizona, supporting both minor and major league players through their recovery and return-to-play process.

Giving Back and Pushing Forward

Beyond the dugouts and athletic training rooms, Rodriguez is shaping the next generation. He owns a performance and rehabilitation business in Arizona and serves as a mentor, speaker, and lecturer for physical therapy programs at Rutgers University and the University of Evansville. He has also presented at national professional conferences and contributed to peer-reviewed research in the field.

Rodriguez is especially committed to mentorshipโ€”helping others rise just as he once was guided.

On May 17, as he takes the stage at Keystoneโ€™s commencement, heโ€™ll do so not only as a respected healthcare professional with a doctorate and global experience, but as a proud Linden sonโ€”a hometown success story still on the rise. His message will remind graduates and his community alike: dream big, work hard, and always remember where you come from.
