Our History

Linden High School, established in September 1910, began its journey with a modest graduating class of three students. Initially, high school classes were held within School No. 1. To accommodate a growing student body, a dedicated high school building was constructed on St. Georges Avenue between Ainsworth and Summit Streets. The cornerstone was laid on October 10, 1924, and the new facility opened its doors in 1925. Subsequent expansions were completed in 1931 and 1960 to further support the school’s development.
A significant figure in the school’s history is Lida M. Ebbert, who served as principal from its inception in 1910 until her retirement in 1952. In recognition of her dedication, the school was renamed the Lida M. Ebbert Linden High School in 1967, and a plaque honoring her was installed in 1960.
Linden High School has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools since 1928, underscoring its commitment to academic excellence. In July 2001, it became an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, offering the IB Diploma Programme to provide students with a rigorous, globally recognized education.
The school boasts a diverse array of accomplished alumni, including:
• Derek Luke: An award-winning actor known for his roles in films such as “Antwone Fisher” and “Friday Night Lights.”
• Tamecka Dixon: A former professional basketball player who had a successful career in the WNBA.
• Muhammad Wilkerson: A professional football player who has played in the NFL.
• Jon Rua: A Broadway actor and choreographer recognized for his work in productions like “Hamilton.”
• Stanton T. Friedman: A nuclear physicist and well-known UFO researcher.
Today, Linden High School serves approximately 1,882 students from grades 9 through 12, maintaining a student–teacher ratio of 14.4:1. The school continues to uphold its traditions of academic rigor, extracurricular engagement, and community involvement, preparing students for success in an ever-evolving world.
